About Hockey

Field hockey is an active, inclusive sport that creates great opportunities for participation across all ages, ability and gender.

Hockey is played by two teams of 11 players (2 umpires). Modified games may be played for development purposes (half field or quarter field).

In Melbourne all hockey association games are played on synthetic surfaces allowing for great skill development and for games to be played in all weather conditions. Hockey facilities have continued to develop with improved surfaces (do not require watering) and access to improved lighting systems including low light spill, low glare and energy efficient lights.

Floodlit grounds allow for competitions to be spread over a week (Masters – Monday and Wednesday nights; Juniors – Friday nights and Saturday mornings; Seniors – Saturday and Sunday afternoons) and for training. Times and locations of games vary week to week.

The versatile surface of a hybrid hockey pitch allows for a wide variety of use by schools and other community sports clubs.

Hockey has strong and growing female participation, including elite women’s competitions, caters for children from age 5 through to masters aged 70+, provides opportunities from social competitions through to elite local competitions and champions and actively supports diversity and community participation.

Hockey is played mainly in winter, but usually not on public holidays and  juniors don’t play in most school holiday weeks.

We also run summer outdoor and indoor teams – men, women, masters, juniors. MCC Hockey are active in visiting local primary schools to run introductory clinics.

MCC Hockey’s hybrid surface (plays dry) ground and social facilities are at Melbourne High School in South Yarra (MCC/MCC Hockey have successfully operated the MHS-MCC hockey ground in conjunction with MHS since 1996 including completing two ground re-lays). A second hybrid ground is proposed at Elwood College.

MCC Hockey, its unpaid volunteers and members have a strong interest and drive to provide participation opportunities for all children in sport and in the sport of hockey.
